Introduction of Jyotish

The history of Vedic astrology is very long. Vedic culture is extremely ancient, at least 5000 years old by moderate estimate. Vedic culture has its own unique doctrine, philosophy, arts, sciences, and literature which exists to this present day. Vedic astrology is an integral part of this culture and has been practiced since ancient time.

The Vedas have six branches known as the Vedanga’s, limbs of the Vedas. One of these is the Jyotish Vedanga–Vedic astronomy and astrology. For thousands of years many Rishis maintained the tradition of Vedic astrology on a parallel track with the Vedas. Portions of these have been extracted at various times and put into the Jyotish Vedanga.

Many Rishis such as Rishi Vashistha, Bhrigu Rishi, and Rishi Garga were masters of astrology and taught it to their disciples in the Guru Shishya paratha. Before the beginning of the present age, Kal-Yuga, which began in 3102 B.C., Parashara Rishi extracted the essence of the various schools of Vedic astrology present at his time and refined it into his text known as the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. Parashara Rishi spoke this text to his disciple Maitreya Rishi, and Maitreya taught it to his disciples, and it was passed in this way through the ages. Thus, the basic school of Vedic astrology practiced in India is called the Parashara school of astrology.

Rishi Parashara was among the last of the Rishis of the Vedic age. After him it was humans who preserved the line of Vedic astrology.

There are six main branches of Vedic astrology:

Gola: positional astronomy
Ganita: mathematical diagnostic tools for analyzing the results of Gola
Jataka: natal astrology
Prashna: answering specific questions based upon the time the question is asked
Muhurta selecting an auspicious time to start something
Nimitta omens and portents.
There are also many sub-branches. The Rishis following Parashara have written texts on all branches.
From India, Vedic astrology spread to the Persians, and from the Persians to the Babylonians, and from them to the Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians.
In ancient India and even up to modern times, astrology was taught to students in schools and universities. Recently the Indian government has again instituted a policy of teaching Jyotish in universities and colleges.

The Significance of time in Astrology

The study of astrology accords primary importance to time. Not even two smallest fractions of time element can be said to be similar. Each of them is different. Every fraction of time energies the living beings in the earth in many ways. The existence of planets and their effects on life on earth depends upon time cycle. Time is the force behind the creation and destruction of every human being in the universe.

One lunar month contains thirty days from divided equally into Shukla Paksha (Pratipada to Purnima) and Krishna Paksha Prathama to Amavasya. The daily rotation of the earth on its axis makes one star day. A Savana Day is of 60 Ghatis duration from one sunrise to the next sunrise. Thus, 360 Savana days form a Savana year. 365.25 days make a solar year. So one day of Brahma is 4.32 million * 1000 = 4.32 billion human years.
There are four Yugas, namely:
1. Satya Yuga = 17, 28,000 human years
2. Thretha Yuga = 12,96,000 human years
3. Dwapar Yuga = 8, 64,000 human years
4. Kali Yuga = 4,32,000 human years

These four Yugas together form the Mahayuga which spans 4,320,000 years.
From English clock, we know time by Hour – Minute – Second, similarly Hindu clock comprises Ghati – Pal – Vipal. And, a day is of 24 hour in English clock & 60 Ghati in Hindu Clock. Like a general day starts from mid-night, that is, 12 o’clock; Hindu day starts with sunrise. So, first Ghati begins with the time of sunrise, as first hour begins after 12 o’clock. The combination of hour – minute – second is known as time. Time given in Ghati – Pal – Vipal is called ‘Ishta-kaal’

The science of astrology helps a person to make his life easier and peaceful in the face of an unknown future. Astrology gives a clue regarding the various experiences one may go through in life. Astrology has roots in the firm belief in pre-birth virtues and vices, re-birth etc. Every living being experiences the fruits of his actions, which could be the results of this birth or previous birth. The horoscope helps to get an insight into the actions of previous births. One may go through the effect of a vicious action in the previous birth in this life. With the help of astrology, we can foresee such instances and take remedial measures.

The directions of planets:

  • Sun represents the soul, moon our heart, Mars our physical body, Mercury good communication skills, Jupiter intelligence, Venus love and Saturn sorrows.
  • Except for Sun and Moon, the other planets sometimes stop their movement and move backwards. This is called retrograde motion or Vakri.
  • Rahu and Ketu are two opposite lunar nodes, they always appear in opposite houses in horoscopes. Both nodes are always in retrograde motion or in Vakri motion.

Combustion of planets

Combustion occurs when planets come too close to Sun. When the planets come within the following distances of Sun they can be considered to have combustion. Moon within 12 degrees from Sun, Mars within 17 degrees, Mercury within 13 degrees, Jupiter within 11 degrees, Venus within 9 degrees and Saturn within 15 degrees.

Rahu and Ketu:

Rahu and Ketu are distinctive to our astrology system. For Rahu and Ketu, Vrisha and Vrischika are the exalted signs respectively. A lot of stress is given to their point of intersection of the ecliptic. It is understood that while Sun is the body, and Moon is the mind, it is the intersection between them that gives tremendous effect. It means planets have full strength in the exalted sign and zero strength in debilitated sign. Their strength declines when they travel from exalted to debilitated sign.

For all planets, the lords of their exalted signs and those of 12, 2, 4, 5, 8, 9 of their Moolathrikonasigns are friends. If they get the lordship of two houses then they become friends and with the lordship of one house they become equal. For planets with lordship of only one sign (Sun and Moon), the lordship of any one of the above mentioned houses will create friends. The planets who are not lords of any of the aforesaid houses become enemies of wishes.

Grahadrishti

Grahadrishti (planetary aspects) is based on the Vedic Astrology system, which does a free epicyclical aspect to find the supremacy on each other. Grahas constitute living forms or energy. All living beings have desire, and the seventh Bhava exhibits desire. So, every graha (except Ketu) has a desire on the seventh from their position.

Every planet has a drishti (view)to the seventh sign from its current sign. Besides Jupiter has special drishtitowards its 5thand 9thhouses. Mars has a special drishtitowards the 4th, 8thhouses and Saturn has towards the 3rdand 10thhouses from its own sign. Gulikahas special drishtitowards the 2ndand 12thhouses from its sign.

The 27 Nakshatras is the name given to the constellation of the Moon as the Moon resides in each of the constellations for one day. These Nakshatras are classified in various ways, according to basic attributes, primary motivation, dharma moksha, and so on.

Nakshatras are divided into three broad categories

Deva Gana (Divine), Rakshasa Gana (Demonic) and Manushya Gana (Human) are the three types of Ganas.

Manushya Gana: This is seen in many human beings. People who work and live for their family and relatives will fall under this group. Such kinds of people do regular works, and if anyone approaches them for any help, they will pretend like they are busy. In other words, these people possess mixed qualities.

Deva Gana: They will possess divine nature, and these persons can be seen rarely. Such people work for others without any expectations.
